Welcome back! I hope you found our first dive into Schema Coaching helpful. As promised, this week we're tackling those burning questions you might have.

Remember Alex, the "Always On" executive? (This guy)

We talked about his ingrained "schemas" driving his behaviour. Let's dig a little deeper into what those actually are.

What are Schemas, Exactly?

You know those cheap sunglasses that colour everything weird? Well, schemas are kinda like that. Alex puts on his 'self-sacrifice' pair, and suddenly, that's all he can see. Yikes!

Now he might be checking his emails late at night, saying ‘yes’ when he probably should say ‘no’, and generally putting his health and wellbeing firmly at the bottom of the in-tray.

See, schemas are deeply rooted patterns, kind of like emotional ‘hard wiring’, which we develop early in life. They're formed from our experiences and tell us how the world works, how others will treat us, and what we deserve. In Alex's case, his schemas likely told him "your worth is tied to achievement" and "you must sacrifice your needs for others."

These patterns become automatic. We react to situations based on these old blueprints, or hard wiring, even when they're no longer helpful. Which is perhaps why traditional performance reviews or time management workshops often fall short. They don't address the underlying emotional drivers.

Here’s a little more on that: Where do Schemas come from?

• Challenge: Reframe negative thought patterns.

• Develop: Build healthier coping mechanisms.
