The last few times we’ve met I’ve rabbited on about the enormous superpower of the *Healthy Adult - and with good reason.

I’ve seen it first hand - If you or someone on your team, can master the practice of having this guy or girl in charge more often, the workplace (and personal) challenges and obstacles are so much easier to conquer.

*Healthy Adult: The side of you that leads with their values in key moments, is strong, confident, calm, compassionate to self and others, caring and assertive.

From Batman analogies, candid conversations about values, right down to challenges in being a detective ‘getting to know’ your healthy adult, we’ve explored the idea of revealing our Healthy Adult in many whacky ways.

Well here’s one more, it’s a bit lighter!

By now you can probably make a clear distinction between when your Healthy Adult is at the wheel, and when it most certainly isn’t.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest if you’re a regular reader of this newsletter, you’re pretty damn capable in lots of ways - there’s some level of professional and life success, which is no accident.

You’ve no doubt worked hard, overcome challenges you thought were impossible and solved problems others weren’t able to at a particular time. All qualities and talents you’ve been rewarded for.

What The Devil Are You On About?!?!?

Glad you asked….Remember that all important ‘Miracle Question’ we explored a few months back?

It works off the assumption that a challenge or problem you’re faced with isn’t ‘new’, and can be overcome using resources and inner strengths you’ve solved previous challenges with.

Think of it like a successful sports team in a form slump - they don’t lose their talent or ability, but just kind of forget how to ‘win’.

Similarly, the Schema way helps identify, or should i say ‘reminds’ us of our inherent strengths and qualities, and puts them to work to overcome workplace challenges.

So What Are These positive schemas?!?

Let’s briefly look at an example…

Belinda presented with several typical unhelpful behaviours (schemas) in the workplace, including:

• Approval Seeking: Always saying yes, needing constant reassurance from her manager.

• Fear of Failure: Avoiding high-stakes tasks unless she could guarantee success.

• Over-Involvement: Stepping in to do others' work, believing “if I don’t, it’ll fall apart.”

• Feeling Controlled: Struggling with authority but not voicing her opinion.

• Lack of Spontaneity: Avoiding risk and creativity in favour of predictability.

As part of getting to know Belinda, I explored where these patterns came from, how they were protecting her, and what her Healthy Adult needed to look like - she identified calm, confident, boundaried, and open. Great start.

Harking back to my days as a TAFE teacher: “First I do, then we do, then you do”

I’d love to now bring you into the fold and help you discover what your positive Schemas are, so in future editions let’s get you all warm and fuzzy about great you really are! (but maybe forget sometimes...).
