SCHEMA COACHING For The Workplace

Dear Subscriber First Name

This week I had a fascinating conversation with a stats man who I reckon would give Pythagoras a run for his money. His enthusiasm for AI was off the charts—charts he probably calculated himself!

He shared how most teams he works with are thrilled about AI’s ability to streamline processes, spark creativity, and boost productivity.

Yet I couldn’t help myself. When people tell me about workplace change, my whacky schema brain kicks in.

So, I had to ask:

“Have you had much resistance to your AI programs, particularly from risk-averse types or, shall we say, ‘mature’ team members who might feel overwhelmed by the genius of AI?”

“Quite a bit, actually,” he confirmed without hesitation.

He told me how some staff—including those in leadership—felt uneasy. It wasn’t just the usual “a robot’s taking my job” type stuff, but also about learning something new from scratch. Overshadowing all of that?

The simmering big ‘C’—Change.

This was a roadblock ‘stats man’ hadn’t anticipated because it had nothing to do with the obvious value of his product.

Sure, embrace change but…

It’s not always that easy is it? Remember our brains are hardwired for familiarity—patterns and routines help us feel safe and in control.

When something disrupts that, like say the arrival of AI at work, it can trigger deep-seated fears of incompetence, uncertainty, or even irrelevance. This is why change often feels threatening, even when we logically know it could be beneficial.

Now a stubborn ‘side’ of us might then take the wheel, firmly protesting, “No way!”—and feeling pretty damn concrete about it.

What do you mean by ‘Side’?

You might’ve heard someone say, “I’m in two minds about this” or “A part of me doesn’t want to do it.”

Working with the different parts, or sides, of a person is an important, and really effective, aspect of Schema Coaching.

So for our AI skeptics in the beforementioned tale, I might ask:

“How does the ‘side’ of you struggling with change feel about this transition?” Then, together we might explore if there’s even a small part of them that’s curious about AI and what it would need to feel more comfortable and supported.

Break on through to the other side…

Understandably, a persons resistance often signals deeper concerns like fear of failure, loss of control, or uncertainty.

So I might then ask: “Tell me about that side of you that’s overcome challenges in the past - how did she do it, what did she learn about herself, and what does she stand for?”

I’m consistently amazed at the loosening of the grip this simple question creates on people's ‘stuck-ness’.

It seems they almost envisage a 'version' of themselves they've not previously recognised, a forgotten strength, or a potential they've always sensed but couldn't quite grasp.

Plus meeting these feelings with curiosity seems to go a long way to helping people feel heard and supported too.

Feeling Game?

I have a challenge for you…

Next time you’re with a resistant or ‘stuck’ team member, give one of the below approaches a try….

  • “I can sense your unease—what part of you is feeling most resistant to this change?”

  • “Is there another part of you that sees potential benefits in this change?”

  • “What does the cautious side of you need to feel more comfortable moving forward?”

  • “What would your more adaptable, problem-solving side say about this situation?”

  • “If you had to take a small step forward, what’s one thing you could try?”

  • “How can we work with the part of you that’s hesitant rather than against it?”

  • “If you were mentoring someone else through this, what advice would you give them?”

*In my experience, when employers embrace the skill of 'rolling with resistance,' they model and encourage employees to embrace change themselves.

And if you’re really keen…

Practice asking yourself some of these in even the most minor of situations, like:

  • getting to the gym or out the door for a run

  • asking that ‘out there’ question in meetings

  • doing something outside your comfort zone

I’d love to know you go - tim@schemacoaching.com.au
